Below you will find three charts for rating what stage of development you think your relationship is in. Using the first chart as a sample, rate the stage where you are in the relationship. Using the second chart as a sample, rate where you think your partner is in the relationship. Using the third chart as a sample, ask your most trusted friends to give their opinion of where each of you is in the relationship.

DATE to DISCOVER

Go on a date to plan some future dates that will be markers in your relationship. For example:

Interest: Try a new hobby together (cooking class, a sport, art class).

Infatuation: Attend an event (such as a wedding, a ball or dance, or concert) that sparks the flirty and fun side of a relationship.

Investigation: Attend a relationship seminar, marriage class, or have dinner with a mentor couple. Learn how others investigate their own compatibility and calling into a relationship.

Investment: Stay overnight at a family member’s home or go on a family vacation (make sure you make plans for separate accommodations to safeguard against any temptation for sexual activity). Any time you are with family, this builds relationship awareness, deepens the relationship bond, and your family will be making an investment into the relationship too.

Interdependence: Go on a date that builds into a shared future, such as shopping for furniture, looking at rings, and attending a real-estate open house.
